Compa-ratio calculator

Salary divided by the band midpoint, plus where it falls between the band's minimum and maximum.

Compa-ratio

How it is calculated

Salary ÷ midpoint

Compa-ratio = salary ÷ band midpoint. 100% means paid exactly at midpoint; below 100% is under midpoint, above 100% is over it.

Range penetration = (salary − band minimum) ÷ (band maximum − band minimum). It places the same salary on a 0–100% scale across the whole band, split here into a lower, middle and upper third.

Worked example. ₹9,50,000 salary, band ₹8,00,000–₹10,00,000–₹12,00,000: compa-ratio is 9,50,000 ÷ 10,00,000 = 95.0%; range penetration is (9,50,000 − 8,00,000) ÷ (12,00,000 − 8,00,000) = 37.5%, the middle of the band.

Questions

Compa-ratio questions

What if the salary is below the minimum or above the maximum?

It's shown as below or above the band. That can be fine — a new joiner, a retention case — but it's worth a second look.

Is 100% the right compa-ratio to aim for?

Many companies target 80–120% depending on level and tenure. There is no universal right answer.

What is range penetration for?

It places a salary on one 0–100% scale across the whole band, which is easier to compare across bands of different widths than compa-ratio alone.
